Sotogrande is built on a private estate that rolls down from the hills to its beautiful beaches. It is, you might say, a modern day Venice in parts, thanks to the construction of luxury apartments around its stunning marina. Sotogrande is highly regarded as a residential area by HNWIs, partly because of the quality and diversity of its real estate, but also because everyone in Sotogrande values their privacy and it is guaranteed in this upmarket resort. It also attracts an international crowd because of its excellent leisure amenities that include golf, polo and yachting, plus excellent medical facilities and one of the top international schools on the Costa del Sol, which is a major draw for families.
It is conveniently positioned for use of the airport at Gibraltar, which is only a short drive away, and for visiting the surfing paradise at Tarifa and the rest of the fabulous Costa de la Luz. It is not even that far from the city of Cadiz, and shopping in Marbella is not even that much of a stretch for the Sotogrande resident, although there are plenty of stylish boutiques in Sotogrande’s marina and its shopping mall.
Golf in Sotogrande
Sotogrande’s golf courses are not simply great, they are also famous. Valderrama is world famous and has hosted the Volvo Masters and Ryder Cup. There is also the Real Club de Golf designed by Robert Trent Jones, which regularly features in Europe’s Top 10 courses. La Reserva is one of the more modern courses and its clubhouse has just had a luxurious refurbishment and added a first-class restaurant to make it a destination golf course. There are also the Almenara and La Cañada courses. In short, there is plenty of choice in Sotogrande and there are superb frontline golf apartments and villas for those who like to live close to their sport.
Sotogrande during the summer becomes a lively hub of activity thanks ot the polo season that brings visitors from around the globe. Santa Maria Polo Club is a highly regarded location on the world circuit and it is the top polo club in Spain. Celebrity fans and royalty turn up to watch or play and the month long premier tournament is always about much more than the polo thanks to the exclusive brand boutiques and pop-up bars at the polo grounds
Boating enthusiasts can rent moorings or charter a yacht in Sotogrande. Those who would like to learn to sail, either for pleasure or as a career will find that Sotogrande is the perfect place to live because Yachting Sotogrande offers all the official RYA courses needed to qualify for private or public use of sailing crafts. There is also a Real Club Maritimo for boat owners and guests.
Apart from Sotogrande International School, which offers primary and secondary education following the British curriculum with classes taught in English there are Spanish bilingual schools – Montecalpe for boys and Puerto Blanco for girls—plus the Little Brains Nursery School, a bilingual playschool that offers quality day care in English and Spanish.
Shopping and dining
The shops are mainly centred around the marina, Galerias Paniagua, Centro Commercial Mar y Sol and Soto Market. Itsomi Boutique at Blue Sotogrande is a favourite for women’s fashion plus there are a host of specialist shops specialising in golf products, polo and equestrian equipment as well as some very smart interior decoration stores. There are also supermarkets, including Lidl, Supersol and Mercadona.
There are some wonderful cafes in Sotogrande including Blackmouth Coffee, De Alicia and Pane & Cioccolato, and it is known for its top quality restaurants. Trattoria Portobello and Restaurante Midas in the marina get excellent reviews, as does Restaurante El Molino de Conde at the other end of the marina. Chambao beach bar is also highly recommended and indeed, there is an astonishing assortment of cuisines available here, from traditional Spanish to South American and Asia, as well as modern European.
Sotogrande is a perfect location for year-round living as well as for vacations and with a remarkable variety of properties that are well priced for the location.
